Introduction
Hello, I am Sophia Anjum. An integrative counsellor and ancestral medical practitioner (in training) with experience in Reiki.
My inspiration to become a therapist stemmed largely from my work with adolescents at a university, coupled with my personal experiences as a parent. During these years, I saw firsthand, the profound need for understanding, guidance, and mentorship for this age group (teenagers)—support that I wished had been available to me during my own formative years.
Recognizing how often young people feel misunderstood and unheard, I was driven to advocate for and support them not just as a professional but as a mentor who truly listens and responds to their concerns

Sophia’s take on Therapy
My philosophy towards mental health and healing is centered on the importance of being heard and understood. I believe that everyone, especially adolescents, needs a safe space where they can express themselves without fear of judgment or dismissal. My approach is to validate their feelings and experiences, which are often minimized or overlooked by society, and to help them navigate their personal and emotional challenges with empathy and compassion.
The Significance of Working with Adolescents: Working with adolescents has highlighted the importance of remembrance and reflection in adult interactions with young people. We often forget our own struggles during those critical years and how we felt isolated or confused. This lack of empathy can lead us to treat current adolescents harshly, labeling them as troublesome or difficult. My aim is to change this narrative, to remind adults of their own journeys, and to encourage a more compassionate and supportive approach to helping young people navigate their complex worlds.
One common misconception about therapy is that it is only for people with severe mental health issues or those in crisis. However, therapy can benefit anyone seeking personal growth, dealing with everyday stress, or wanting to improve their relationships and overall life satisfaction.
Another misconception is that therapy is a quick fix. In reality, therapy is a process that involves active participation and can take time to see significant results. In Pakistani culture, there is often a stigma associated with seeking mental health services. This can stem from traditional beliefs that prioritize familial advice or spiritual solutions over professional mental health support. Mental health issues might be perceived as a weakness or a family matter that should be kept private.
